Basal clump of quite large, broad leaves, reminiscent of a primrose. In mid and late spring, strong stems carry heads of down-turned, dart-like flowers with reflexed petals, pinky-mauve. Becomes dormant in summer after flowering.
Needs a moist humus-rich soil that does not dry out. Prefers partial shade but will tolerate a sunnier position if plenty of moisture is available.
From seed or by division of clumps in spring.
Suitable for damp woodlands.
From the North West USA.
