Attractive smallish short-lived perennial or biennial. Rosettes of slender, pointed, white-hairy basal leaves. Produces long spikes of dark red flowers with protruding filaments.
Well drained soil in a sunny position. Easy to grow and hardy.
Dislikes transplanting and excessively wet soil conditions in winter.
From seed, best sown in-situ. May self seed in suitable conditions.
Borders, prairie-type grassland plantings.
