Clump forming, rhizomatous deciduous perennial. Purple tinted young leaves and relatively large pale yellow flowers.
Likes a woodland type situation. Best in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well drained soil and partial shade. Benefits from occasional mulching with leaf-mould or similar. Remove old leaves in late winter before new growth starts.
Used as a medicinal herb to treat impotence and increase sexual libido in both men and women. First used in traditional Chinese medicine. Also reputed to slow the ageing process.
