Frilly rosettes of bright green leaves produced from knobbly tubers and bright yellow flowers appearing in late winter. If conditions suit the plants will spread to and self seed to form large colonies.
Prefers reasonably fertile, humus-rich soil that not dry out in summer. Thrives in alkaline soils. Dappled shade or full sun. Moist woodland conditions are ideal. Tubers should be planted about 5cm deep, in autumn.
From seed or by separating tubers in spring, after flowering.
Naturalising in grass or woodland. Good, cheerful colour early in the year, often before snowdrops are in flower.
Found wild in damp woodlands from southern France to Bulgaria.
