Clump forming tuberous perennial. Bright yellow flowers in early spring, above ruffs of finely divided, bronze-tinged, mid-green leaves. Similar to Eranthis hymalis but foliage is more divided and flowers are slightly larger.
Prefers reasonably fertile, humus-rich soil that not dry out in summer. Thrives in alkaline soils. Dappled shade or full sun. Moist woodland conditions are ideal. Tubers should be planted about 5cm deep, in autumn.
From seed or by separating tubers in spring, after flowering.
Naturalising in grass or woodland.
Found from Turkey to Afghanistan.
