Robust wildflower usually found in damp places. Erect reddish stems of lobed, toothed leaves and from summer to early autumn, dense flattened flowerheads, usually whitish-pink but can vary from white to reddish-purple.
Prefers damp soils and some shade but not very fussy and can thrive in quite dry limestone areas and on beach shingle.
From seed or root division in autumn.
Wild or woodland garden, especially near water.
Sometimes used dried as a medicinal herb, in large doses it is a powerful laxative.
Native to much of Europe including Britian. Commonly found in damp woodlands, stream sides and marshes but may also occr as an urban weed on wasteground.
