Spreading straggly shrub with very spiny stems and obovate green or greyish green leaves. Branching inflorences carry small flowers with a pair of rounded, usually bright red, petal-like bracts. Will often produces flowers throughout the year. There are many forms and cultivars with various flower colours.

Well drained, poorish, sandy or gritty soil. Best in full sun but will tolerate a little light shade. Drought tolerant. While it should be kept in the dry side, regular watering will encourage good foliage and flowering.
