Culinary vegetable that is grown for its bulb-like, swollen stem base. F1 hybrid producing high yields of large, thick, rounded bases with a strong aniseed-like flavour. Finely divided, feathery green foliage and heads of small yellow flowers in summer. Strongly aromatic. Biennial.
Moist, well drained, light sandy soil in full sun and a mild climate. In adverse conditions such as cold or very dry soil, the swollen basal bulb may not form.
Pull up the soil around developing bulbs, to blanch them and aid stability.
The bulbs are harvested by cutting just below ground level.
From seed, sown in situ, in spring in cool climates, after the last frosts, or in late summer in warm climates, giving bulbs for winter harvesting.
Ornamental appearance, very suitable for potagers and kitchen gardens.
Has a strong aniseed-like flavour.
The foliage may used as a culinary and medicinal herb, in exactly the same way as common fennel.
