Spring flowering bulb with narrow lance shaped leaves. Bell-shaped flowers hang downwards and have pinkish-purple or sometimes white petals with prominent chequered markings.

Needs moist, reasonably well drained, fertile humus-rich soil and fairly cool conditions during summer. Grows naturally in damp meadows. Notoriously fussy about conditons but will thrive and increase stongly if suitable.
