The male of this species is a magnificent evergreen, draped during January and February with long, greyish green catkins. The female plant is nearly as effective with its long clusters of deep purple-brown fruits. Dense foliage of oblong to elliptic, wavy-edged leaves, greyish green to dark green.
Reasonably fertile, well drained soil, preferably in sun or part shade, but will also tolerate quite deep shade. Hard frosts may cause leaf damage. Does well in mild seaside locations.
Can be effectively trained as a wall shrub.
From seed or semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer.
Excellent shrub for winter interest.
The genus Garrya was named after Nicholas Garry, of the Hudson's Bay Trading Company, a friend of the plant hunter David Douglas.
