Lax sprawling or trailing habit. Locally variable, pink or sometimes mauve or blue tinted flowers, often with white centres. Flowers over a long period, from June to October. Divided, often mottled foliage.

Moderately fertile, well drained soil in sun or part shade. Cut back after flowering to encourage new growth and sometimes repeat flowering.

From seed or by division.

The species is rarely grown in gardens, but is the parent of several popular cultivars and hybrids.
