Tall, slender plant with sword-like linear leaves up to 65cm long. Spikes of reddish purple flowers, arranged either side of the stem, produced in spring and early summer. Green fruiting capsules containing orange-brown seeds follow.
Thrives in light well drained soil and full sun. Performs best if baked over the summer.
By seed or bulb offsets.
Native to the Mediterranean area, found on rocky hillsides, grassy areas and open forests, olive groves and cultivated land.
