Striking large leaved perennial. Curious brownish flower spikes. Must have a damp soil which does not become dried out and the crowns must be protected in winter. Perfect as a bold specimen plant for the waterside.

Cut leaves off in late autumn/early winter and invert them over the crown of the plant to give protection against frost. Hold down with twigs or branches and use extra leafmould or mulch if necessary. Must have a rich soil that does not dry out.

Superb waterside plant. Can also be used in borders, where condition suit, to provide a dramatic foliage effect.

other notes:
Has the largest leaves of any plant that can be grown outside in Britain. Despite its common name, it is not a member of the rhubarb family. Comes from South America.
