Tropical evergreen shrub with glossy green foliage. Produces large, often dramatically attractive flowers, which can be red, orange, pink, white or yellow. The flowers are short-lasting but repeat freely. In warm temperatures they may be borne throughout the year.
There are a great many named cultivars and hybrids.
Moist, well-drained, humus-rich fertile soil in a warm, sheltered and sunny position. Frost-tender and needs warmth to grow well.
May be pruned to shape or reduce size, usually done in late summer or autumn.
For plants grown under glass it is beneficial to allow a resting period during winter, at fairly cool temperatures of around 12°C.
From seed or cuttings
Popular ornamental shrub for sub-tropical and tropical regions. Good conservatory plant in cooler areas.
Sometimes used to form hedges in suitable climates.
