Strong growing shrub reaching up to 20ft. It has silvery, willow-like leaves and sharp thorns. The flowers which appear in March and April are inconspicuous, but they are followed, on female plants, by masses of orange berries which are left untouched by birds. They remain on the bush from September until February.

Prefers moist, well drained, sandy, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. However it will grow in almost any soil and position, is resistant to salt spray, exposed or coastal positions and it is very hardy.
Male and female plants need to be plant together to ensure fruiting.

Used as coastal windbreaks and for stabilising sand dunes. Also now extensively used for roadside verge planting.
