This small shrub with fuzzy pale to mid green leaves. Unusual buds are shaped like globes opening to oval shaped lacecap flowers, usually blooming relatively late in summer, although sometimes produced earlier. The flowers are normally lavender-blue to lilac with white ray-florets. There are several named forms.

Moist, well drained, reasonably fertile, humus-rich soil. Sun or part shade, preferably with shelter from cold, drying winds. May become chlorotic on very shallow chalky soil.
