Hortensia type with large, domed mopheads, tending to be crimson red or purple on neutral to acid soils. Resists turning blue on acid soils. Compact habit and good dense foliage of large glossy green leaves.

Moist, well drained, reasonably fertile, humus-rich soil. Sun or part shade, preferably with shelter from cold, drying winds. May become chlorotic on very shallow chalky soil. Performs well in seaside locations.
The flower colour is influenced by the soil pH.
