Small deciduous shrub with reddish tinted young shoots and leaves, ageing to deep green. Golden yellow flowers, about 6cm across, freely produced in late summer and autumn.
Rather tender and needs a warm position with shelter from cold winds.
Native to South-West China but commonly cultivated in Japan, from where it was introduced by Richard Oldham in 1862. Rarely cultivated in Britian but quite a popular garden plant in Europe.
