Bushy subshrub with aromatic, narrow pointed leaves. Spikes of small violet-blue flowers in late summer. Evergreen in mild climates.
Well-drained, moderately fertile neutral to alkaline soil. Likes full sun.
Leaves are used as a flavouring and the flowers are edible. An essential oil is made from the leaves and stems, also used for flavouring, in perfumery and aromatherapy. There is a long history of use as a medicinal herb.
Attracts bees and butterflies.
Can be used for low hedging in the herb garden or potager.
