Slowly spreading deciduous perennial grass, forms loose clumps of erect mid-green leaves, turning blood-red from the tips. May produce narrow, fluffy silvery-white flowering spikes in late summer, but rarely flowers.
Moist but well-drained, humus rich soil in full sun or light dappled shade. Best colour in sun. Non-invasive.
Cut back hard in late winter or early spring.
By division in spring.

Almost certainly the same plant as Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' and widely sold under that name. However some authorities list them as separate cultivars, with 'Rubra' having burgundy-red shading while 'Red Baron is more distinctly bright red and green at the base.
