Tropical evergreen shrub with oblong leathery dark green leaves. Rounded dense bushy habit, variable in size and normally smaller in cultivation, usually reaching about 2m high. Clusters of small tubular scarlet-red flowers, which can be produced at almost any time of year. May produce rounded berries, dark red to near black when fully ripe.
There are a number of named cultivars.
Likes a warm, humid climate and will not survive any significant periods of frost. Moist, well drained humus-rich, lime-free soil. Best in full sun, or in very hot areas will grow in part shade.
Tolerates hard pruning.
From seed or by cuttings.
Tropical and sub-tropical gardens, conservatory or greenhouse plant.
In warm climates can be used for hedging and is popular as a landscape plant.
Has some traditional medicinal value in India.
Native to India and Sri Lanka and widely cultivated throughout South-East Asia.
