Shrub or small tree with a dense conical crown of very slender shoots covered by small, blueish-green scale-like leaves, or needle-like on young plants. Dark brown bark. Rounded fruits up to about 1cm across, greenish at first then ageing to glossy yellowish or reddish-brown, ripening in the second year and containing 3 to 9 seeds.
Tolerates a wide range of conditions including dry, rocky situations. Full sun or light shade. very drought tolerant and resistant to strong winds.
From seed or by heeled semi-hardwood cuttings.
The wood is very hard and durable and where available is sometimes used for door frames and similar purposes.
Has been used for medicinal purposes.
Native to Britain to the coastal Mediterranean area, also found in the Canaries and parts of the Near East.
