Robust evergreen perennial with arching, linear, pointed leaves. Bold spikes of orange-red flowers, ageing to yellow, borne on sturdy stems from summer to early autumn.
Reasonably fertile, moist, well drained, preferably sandy soil in full sun. Tolerates a little light shade.
From seed or by division of clumps
Native to South Africa, occasionally naturalised in other mild climate areas.
This was the first species introduced into Britain, around 1700.
