Short-lived perennial twining climber but usually grown as a half-hardy annual. The 3-palmate leaves are purplish-green above and purple-maroon underneath. Very attractive fragrant flowers of purple, lilac and mauve. Edible purple-flushed green seed pods follow.

Extensively grown, especially in North America, as an ornamental climber and for its nutritious edible beans.
