Small bulbous perennial with broadly strap-shaped mottled leaves. Spikes of tubular flowers, golden yellow tipped with green and purple-red and red at the bases, produced in late winter or early spring.
Quite tender and needs a cool but frost free situation. Good in an alpine house or cool conservatory. Ideal winter temperture for flowering is around 10C. Best in reasonablely fertile, humus rich soil which is moist but well drained in winter and dry during the dormant period in summer. Sunny position.
From seed, leaf cuttings or separation of bulblets.
Containers, or can be naturalised in Mediterranean and other warm climate areas.
