'Cos' type lettuce, with dark burgundy-red flushed leaves. Fast growing, can be picked young or left to form compact heads. Crisp with a good flavour.
Rich, moist but free draining soil, preferably about neutral pH, in sun or with a little shade from hot sun and shelter from strong winds. Avoid polluted air or soil conditions. Soil with very high nitrogen levels results in bitter tasting leaves. May need frequent watering in dry seasons.
Slugs and snails can be a problem.
From seed, best sown in succession from spring to midsummer.
Salad vegetable. Very decorative and useful in potagers.
