Hairy annual with square-section stems and oval, bluntly-toothed leaves of dull green often flushed purple. Whorls of pinkish-purple flowers are produced on the upper part of the stems from spring to autumn. Common wildflower and garden weed.
Moist, well drained soil and partial or deep shade. Will grow in full sun if not too dry.
By seed. In the wild the seeds are distributed by ants, as they contain a substance called elaiosome which attracts them.
Wildflower garden and woodlands. Good bee plant.
Common wildflower or garden weed, native to Britain. Rarely causes a problem as it is quite easy to control.
