Large shrub or conical evergreen tree with aromatic, glossy, dark green leaves. Clusters of small greenish-yellow flowers in spring, male and female on separate plants, followed, on female plants, by black berries.
Reasonable fertile, well drained soil in full sun or part. Needs shelter from cold winds and a mild location not subject to severe frosts.
May be clipped to shape if required.
Leaves are commonly used for cooking.
