Moist, well drained, humus rich, acid soil in part or deep shade. Protect from cold drying winds in areas susceptible to hard frosts. May spread widely by suckering.

From seed, sown on the surface of the compost in spring. Also by softwood cuttings in early summer or separation and replanting of rooted suckers.

Woodland gardens, peat bed or shrub border.
