Tuberous perennial forming dense clumps of evergreen narrow, strappy leaves with narrow spikes of bright violet-mauve flowers in autumn.
Best in fertile, moist but well drained, lightish loamy or sandy soil and some shade. Will tolerate most soils and grow in sun to deep shade.
Foliage can be cut back hard in late winter or early spring, to encourage new fresh growth.
From seed or by division, can be slow to re-establish.
Good ground cover when mass planted.
