Finely-toothed, lance-shaped, light green leaves. Spikes of tubular, blue-violet flowers in late summer. Moisture loving.
Likes rich, damp soil in sun or part shade. More tolerant of dryish conditions the Lobelia cardenalis. Prone to damage by slugs.
By seed or division.
Good as a marginal or bog plant and for moist, wild woodland gardens.
Used by the Native Americans as a herbal remedy for various ailments.
Found wild in swamps, wet meadows and damp woods of North America.
