Large fungus with a distinctive scaly brownish cap. Creamy white gills and a pinkish brown tinged, whitish stem which is bulbous at the base, The flesh is white, but becomes orangey or pinkish when cut. Spores are white.

Grows in humus rich soil and leaf-mould, feeding on the decaying organic matter.

Edible when cooked, but can cause a serious allergic reaction in some people.
