Small deciduous tree, usually of compact rounded habit or sometimes multi-stemmed. Very dark burgundy red goblet-shaped flowers, produced on bare stems before the leaves. Distinctive and very striking when in full flower in mid spring.
Very young trees may have smaller and lighter flowers at first.
Prefers heavy, rich and moist lime free soil, but quite adaptable. Best in a sheltered position with protection from cold winds and late frosts.
Can be pruned after flowering or in July or August.
Tolerant of atmospheric pollution.
