Robust shrub with large prickly, pinnate. dark green leaves. Racemes of fragrant, pale yellow flowers followed by blue-purple berries. More bushy in habit than the hybrid forms and flowers a little later in winter.

Unfussy and adaptable. Prefers reasonably fertile, moist, well drained soil in part or full shade.

Prune in spring.

Good for winter interest in woodland gardens.
