Dense, slow growing small to medium evergreen shrub. Pinnate leaves with 3 to 5 small, rigidly spiny, dark green leaflets which turn dark plum-purple in cold winters. Dense clusters of yellow flowers in spring followed by bloomy black berries.

Tolerant of a wide range of conditions but best in moist, well drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil in sun or part shade.
If required, trim or cut back after flowering.
