Perennial wildflower of woodlands and hedge bottoms with vigorously creeping, branching underground rhizomes. Emerges in early spring with short erect stems bearing opposite, pointed, finely toothed leaves. Sometimes forms extensive carpets of foliage. Spikes of small greenish-white flowers in spring, male and female on separate plants.
Moist, humus-rich soil in part or deep shade. Thrives in alkaline conditions. Can be invasive in gardens.
By seed or rhizome segments.

Common native of Europe, including Britain.
The whole plant is toxic.
