Spreading, sometimes thorny, small deciduous tree or large shrub. Alternate, oblong to oval, downy green leaves, turning russet-brown in autumn. Solitary white flowers in late spring or early summer. Distinctive rounded, fleshy brown fruits up to 5cm across.
Moderately fertile, well drained soil, preferably in full sun or light shade.
The fruits are used to make conserves, but need to be left to become over-ripe and half-rotten first.
Native to South East Europe and parts of Western Asia but long cutivated throughout Europe and naturised in many places, including Britain.
