description:
Small to medium sized, evergreen or semi-evergreen tree, erect and pyramidal when young then spreading with age. Glossy dark green leaves up to 18cm long, glaucous underneath. Fragrant, white, magnolia-like flowers which open in spring from brownish buds formed the previous autumn at the leaf axils.

cultivation:
Need a sheltered, mild location with moist, well drained, humus-rich, lime-free soil. Full sun or partial shade with protection from cold winds. Reputedly not hardy but thrives in favoured spots of the South West of England.

propagation:
From seed, greenwood or semi-ripe cuttings.

other notes:
From sub-tropical areas of the Himalayas, Tibet and Southwestern China. Introduced by George Forrest about 1918.
