description:
Bulbous perennial, each bulb having only one or occasionally two, semi-erect lance-shaped leaves encircling the stem at the base. Small dense flowerheads with a two-tone effect, having very dark violet-purple lower flowers and paler, blue, sterile flowers above. There may be some variation in colour.

cultivation:
Moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Lift and divide clumps when dormant in summer, if they become congested. Increases well.
