Attractive flowering evergreen shrub for mild locations. Dark green aromatic leaves. Profusely borne, rounded, white tufted flowers in late summer. Small purple-black fruits in autumn and winter. Quite fast growing if the conditions suit.
Best in moderately fertile, preferably neutral to alkaline, well drained soil in full sun with protection from cold winds. In a favoured position it often appears to be hardier than expected, surviving temperatures down to about -10°C.
Can be used for hedging in mild climate areas.
The fruits are edible and used to make conserves.
