Annual herb with very aromatic, bright green leaves up to 10cm long, oppositely arranged on freely branched, square-sectioned stems. Whorls of very small white or purple flowers.
Moist, well drained, reasonably fertile soil in full sun, or part shade in very hot climates. Tender and very sensitive to frost, grows best in warm conditions but quite easy as a fast-growing summer annual.
Flowering stem tips may be removed to extend the life and usefulness of the plant, which may last up to two years in warm areas.
Important culinary herb. Extensively used in Mediterranean cooking. Major ingredient of pesto.
Also has uses as a medicinal herb.
Native to tropical parts of Asia. Long cultivated and common in other areas.
Basil is a sacred plant to the Hindu religion and is also venerated by the Greek Orthodox church.
