Small evergreen tree which is very familiar in the Mediterranean area. Opposite, small leathery, grey-green leaves. Panicles of tiny, fragrant, creamy white flowers in summer, followed by ovoid or rounded, green fruits which ripen to black. Eventually develops a very gnarled trunk.
Sharply drained soil in full sun. Hardy down to about -10 C once well established.
From seed or semi-ripe cuttings in spring.
The olive is of considerable economic importance for its oil and fruit.
