Wide spreading medium-sized deciduous tree. Hornbeam like, heavily veined leaves. Long greenish yellow catkins. Strange hop-like fruits appear in autumn, greenish at first, later turning brown.
Any reasonable soil in sun or part shade. Grows well on chalk soils. Young trees tend to be slow growing at first.
Notably resistant to honey fungus.
Produces a very hard, close grained timber.
