Vigorous tendril climber with alternate palmate 3 or 5-lobed leaves. Showy large white and purple flowers followed by large yellow-green skinned fruits.
Top growth is half-hardy and killed by frost, but established rootstocks are regarded as hardy in well drained soils and will re-shoot in spring.
Moist, well drained, fertile soil in sun or part shade. Keep on the dry side in winter.
If required, prune lightly in autumn. In spring old shoots can be cut back by about one third.
From seed or cuttings.
Ornamental climber for a warm location or good in a conservatory.
Leaves and seeds are used as an important medicinal herb, mainly for the treatment of insomnia and nervous conditions.
Fruits are edible.
