Evergreen tendril climber, or semi-evergreen in areas with cool winters. 3 to 5 lobed leaves. Freely produced, very attractive, rich violet purple flowers during the summer. Seldom fruits. Rather variable and several different forms exist, including some named cultivars.

Well drained soil in sun or part shade. Reasonably frost hardy, but best in a warm location or can be grown in a conservatory.

By cuttings or layering.
