Clump forming bamboo of gracefully erect and arching habit. Canes are green the first year later becoming mottled dark brown/black and finally shiny jet black. Small leaves. In the UK growth is fairly slow at first, becoming quicker and producing taller, thicker stems as the clump establishes.
Moist, well drained soil in sun or part shade. Likes a bit more sun than some other species.
The lower branches may be trimmed off to emphasise the attractive canes.
Sought after ornamental, very popular with garden designers.
Shoots are edible, if cut while young and tender.
