Tuft-forming alpine perennial. Toothed, ovate to heart-shaped, mid to dark green leaves. Compact terminal clusters of up to 20 bottle-shaped, pale violet flowers with tapering dark violet tips, produced in late summer.

Poor to moderately fertile, gritty, sharply drained, preferably alkaline soil in full sun. Dislikes winter wet. Susceptible to damage by slugs and snails.
