description:
Tall, very narrow, spire-like shape. The short branches sweep downward and then ascend at the tips, giving a very graceful appearance. Dark brown bark splitting into square plates. Short, glossy dark green needles with white bands underneath, lying flat at the sides of the shoots. Egg-shaped cones are dark purple when young maturing to a reddish brown.

cultivation:
Prefers growing in average, moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Better tolerance for hot, humid climates and air pollution than most other species of spruce.

Very ornamental parkland tree.
