Tall growing evergreen usually with a straight trunk and narrowly conical habit. Needle-like leaves up to 13cm long, held in groups of 5. Male stroboli are yellow and female pinkish green, developing into large narrow cones up to about 30cm long, taking 2 years to mature before releasing the winged seeds. The mature bark is grey and becomes fissured into square plates.
Grows best in moist, well drained sandy, somewhat acidic soils. Will tolerate poor soils and a wide range of climatic conditions.
Very susceptible to white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola), which has had a devastating effect of some native populations.
Ornamental speciman tree for parkland.
Valuable timber tree.
