Slow growing dwarf cultivar eventually making a large shrub. Glaucous blue-green, needle-like leaves are arranged in fives. Light brown, pendent cones, about 20cm long, with scales tipped by pale resinous blobs. They are freely produced from when the tree is quite young.
Prefers light to medium, acid or neutral, well-drained soils. Can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Established trees can tolerate drought.
Grows at about 15cm per year.
By grafting. Seed may produce unpredictable results.
Shrub borders, conifer beds, the display of cones makes good winter interest.
Originated as a witch's broom found by William Gotelli and George Erhle at Macopin, New Jersey.
